Sonya has extensive experience with conventional and functional testing and uses this in a targeted to assess the underlying cause of imbalance in the body.
At the wellness centre we offer the following testing:
Body Composition assessment
Body composition is the analysis of the amount of body fat to muscle. Both important parameters to monitor health. If muscle is being maintained or built it is generally a sign of good health, adequate nutrient intake and adequate activity. Muscle weight loss and fat weight gain is indicative of health decline either due to poor diet, inadequate activity and/or the presence of certain pathology. Whether your goal is to lose weight or improve health, body composition is a quick way to assess and monitor your progress. At The Wellness Centre we utilise the BodyMetrix device which uses ultrasound technology to measure body composition.
Bone Health Assessment
Bone density is the term used to describe bone strength. Healthy bones are dependant on:
- Adequate nutrient intake of calcium and other minerals, vitamin D, K, B vitamins, protein, and sufficient energy in general
- Adequate digestion and absorptions of the nutrients above
- Correct pH balance of the body
- Healthy hormone balance
- Adequate exercise
The bone density ultrasound is a fantastic tool that can assess bone density without exposure to radiation. It can be used to screen your bones to see they are at the correct density for your age or identify early signs of bone loss to reduce the risk of osteoporosis long term. Similar to muscle weight, adequate bone density is a sign of balanced health.
Sleep is essential to health. We believe from the point of view of truly treating the person as a whole, it is key to assess sleep quantity and quality.
We spend approximately a third of our life sleeping and it is not always obvious that our sleep is compromised.. Suboptimal sleep can contribute to fatigue, reflux and allergies. Long term sleep issues can predispose people to develop chronic conditions such as high blood pressure, heart disease, depression, anxiety, heart attacks and strokes. The Wellness Centre utilises a screening device that you can assess your sleep in the privacy of your own home. It measures oxygen levels, pulse rate and your breathing pattern while sleeping. Results are available during your consultation on returning the device. Your practitioner will discuss your results with you and incorporate practical techniques to improve your sleep quantity and quality. If more serious sleep pathology is identified, you will be able to take your report with you to your general practitioner to consider further medical investigation.
Regular Medical Investigations
In collaboration with your Doctor or ordered privately you may be recommended to have pathology testing for specific nutritional imbalances – these may include tests looking into sugar metabolism, general biochemistry, cholesterol, nutrient deficiencies etc.
Sonya has extensive experience in functional testing and uses this in a targeted way when the clinical picture warrants this kind of investigation.
Functional tests may include:
- Comprehensive Stool Analysis
- Nutrient Assessment such as Zinc, Iron, Iodine, Vitamin D, B12
- Urinary Metabolic Profiles
- Comprehensive Thyroid Assessment
- Hormone Testing via urine (such as dutch testing)
- Food Sensitivity Testing
- Bone Metabolism
- Heavy Metal Testing
- Comprehensive cholesterol panels
- Liver detoxification
- Genetic testing
